Can Crowns Be Used to Straighten Teeth?

Q.
Hello, I have a question to ask. I’m 65 years old and have been to see my dentist about having my teeth straightened. I assumed he would suggest braces of some sort, but he wants to do it by using crowns – 20 of them! He told me that my teeth won’t move easily with a brace, but when they’ve been crowned they will be re-aligned, so not crooked anymore. I just thought I’d come to you for a second opinion. Can teeth be straightened with crowns?
A.
Hi, thanks for your question. I would need to see you ideally in order to know for definite which treatment would be most beneficial to you. 20 crowns does sound like an excessive amount of restorative work, but as I say it is hard to tell whether or not it is the right solution for you without seeing your current condition. If you’re not sure, I would suggest a couple more consultations, perhaps with different dentists, to see if there are any alternative treatments that would work for you. Good luck!
