Is It Bad to Wear Aligners at Night?

August 21st, 2014
Q.

Hi. I would really like to have Invisalign treatment, they sound by far the best of all the braces I’ve been reading up on, but I’m worried about wearing them during the night. I’ve heard that wearing aligners when you’re asleep is really bad for your oral health and can cause plaque to build up.I’m hoping it’s just a horror story with no truth in it and obviously I would keep my teeth and aligners clean. But before I go ahead with this I’d just like to double check with an expert like your good selves.

Can I Drink Red Wine When I Take the Aligners Out?

August 15th, 2014
Q.

Hello doctor! I have read that red wine will lead to staining of aligners, and also the teeth themselves if you drink with them in. What about when you drink with them not in your mouth and you clean teeth straight after. Is this okay? I’m a big fan of red wine but I really don’t want to stain the aligners, so I’m hoping you can give me some piece of mind!

Why Has My Bite Changed?

August 12th, 2014
Q.

Hi Drs. I’m really concerned about my bite. I recently finished my Invisalign treatment and have noticed a change in my bite from when I started. I thought it was because of the aligners doing their job during the treatment but obviously now the problem is still here. My molars don’t touch when I close my jaws and it doesn’t feel right. My dentist told me the aligners wouldn’t affect my bite but obviously this is not true. Will I have this problem forever now or is there something that can be done to put it right?

Am I Suitable for Invisalign After Having Gum Disease?

August 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have suffered with gum disease for about a year now and have been visiting my dentist for periodontal treatment for a number of months to get it under control. I really want to use Invisalign to straighten my teeth, but am I suitable for it after having gum disease? Due to the gum disease there are gaps between my teeth that are quite noticeable. I plan to book a consultation as soon as I can, but I’d love to hear any advice you might have for me. Thanks in advance!

My Teeth Have Relapsed, What Can Be Done?

August 5th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Thorne. I had Invisalign treatment 2 years ago, but I don’t think I wore the aligners for as long as I should have, I mean I would take them out quite often when I probably shouldn’t have, and I didn’t wear the retainers every night. My teeth weren’t really that bad but still enough of a problem for me to have braces to straighten them. I think my teeth have relapsed slightly, as there is a slight overlap between my top 2 teeth. What can be done about this?

I’m Worried My Teenage Daughter Won’t Wear Her Aligners Properly. What Do You Suggest?

July 28th, 2014
Q.

Hello.

My daughter turns 15 next April, and our family dentist has made suggestions that she might need braces on both her lower and upper teeth. Obviously she’s at that age where looks mean everything to her and she’s very self-conscious about what people at school might think or say to her. The dentist did mention Invisalign and it does seem like that’s the one she wants to go for but it’s going to cost me a lot of money as I’ve been told they are not available on the NHS. I’d be happy knowing that she was comfortable at school but then I’m concerned that she’ll take the aligners out when I’m not around and obviously that would be a waste of my money. What is your suggestion? Thank you.

Please Can You Provide Some Information on Vivera Retainers?

July 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Akere

I’m thinking of having Invisalign and have looked at the prices on various websites, but my concern is about the Vivera retainer. I know this is something I’ll have to wear after treatment but I can’t seem to find a lot of information about them. Is there an additional cost for the retainer? I’d also like to know how long they last. Hope to hear back from you.

Am I Allergic to Invisalign?

July 21st, 2014
Q.

Hi there, I’m hoping you can help to answer my question. I started Invisalign treatment a month ago, and I anticipated some mild discomfort at first but my gums are actually severely swollen. This started roughly around the time I got my first aligner, but it hasn’t gotten any better. Is it possible that I’m allergic to the aligner? If so, what can be done about it? Thank you.

My Aligners Cause Me a Lot of Pain. What Can I Do?

July 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi, I have been suffering with a lot of pain during my Invisalign treatment, and it gets worse with every new set of aligners. My gums are sore and swollen and I feel like I constantly have mouth ulcers. My dentist says this is bound to happen. I imagined it would be painful at first but it is really just constant all the time. Due to the amount of pain it causes I keep having to take them out so I’m worried that they’re not working as they should because I don’t have them in long enough. I haven’t told my orthodontist that I take them out because I don’t want him to be angry. What should I do?

Does Chlorine Stain Invisalign Aligners?

June 25th, 2014
Q.

Hi, I have a query about Invisalign. I swim professionally, and have been looking into using Invisalign to straighten my teeth. Would I be able to do this? I swim for a few hours every day, would I be able to keep the aligners in? My concern is they might get stained by the chlorine in the water. I’m seeing an orthodontist next week but I thought I’d ask for some advice from you before my consultation. Thank you.
