How many times a day should I brush my teeth?

Q.
I know you are supposed to clean your teeth and aligner after each time you eat. But, instead of three meals a day I will usually have five smaller ones. Because of this I have to brush my teeth quite a lot. I have now read that brushing teeth too often can wear away enamel. Should I limit how often I do it? Also, because of the aligners I’ve been brushing my teeth too often and I feel as if my gums are receding they look like they are anyway, how many times a day should I brush my teeth? I feel the aligners make my mouth feel unclean.

Hi
I’m glad you are maintaining your oral hygiene during your Invisalign treatment. It would be unlikely you will cause damage to the enamel because of this but I would recommend an appointment with a hygienist who can check you are brushing your teeth effectively and without too much force or pressure that causes problems. A gentle brush after each meal will be sufficient…and I would also recommend the electric toothbrushes such as a sonicare or oral B.
Finally to keep your aligners fresh – have you tried retainer brites? Your dentist should be able to give you some samples of these.
