Hello Dr Adam Thorne, I was per chance wondering if you could please advise me on my situation, in that i had a brace when i was thirteen and tehn wore a retainer for two years and now my teeth are perfectly straight. recently i quit smoking and started using a teeth whitening toothpaste two times each daily , now i have big marks on my teeth which looks like the marks were my braces where i had them. i am scared of it and i cant smile it makes me cringe plz help.

Hi and thank you for your enquiry, this is difficult to diagnose without seeing you – there could be a number of reasons, such as some residual cement from where the braces were that can easily by polished off. Alternatively whitening may improve this or something called microabrasion if the marks are slightly deeper. I would suggest seeing a cosmetic dentist for a diagnosis and your treatment options.
