Is my daughter’s tooth grinding causing her Invisalign tray to break?

Q.
Hello, my question is for my 14 yr. old daughter who has been wearing Invisalign. First, I’d like to mention she grinds her teeth badly at night and whenever she is stressed. That being said, she has broken multiple trays. And, at the last dentist visit the bottom tray was so off it would not fit. So, new impressions had to be made and the dentist truly feels that the breakage is from her not wearing them 22 hrs. a day. Is it possible they are breaking from her grinding and maybe people who grind their teeth should not be canadites for Invisilign. My daughter insists she’s been wearing them and we did tell the dentist that she grinds her teeth at the consultation. Your view would be very much appreciated. VERY frustrating !!!

Hi there! I think we need to explore 2 issues. Firstly is the grinding. I have a lot of patients that are grinders and they find that wearing the aligners actually helps them and they haven’t broken an aligner yet. On the other hand it is very hard to assess how strongly someone grinds their teeth. Secondly, is the fact that the bottom aligner did not fit. That indicates that most likely the previous aligners were not worn properly and long enough and is irrelevant to grinding. Each set must be worn for 2 weeks and only be removed to eat and clean your teeth. Another reason why the aligners are breaking could be that they are not being removed properly and gently, especially around the attachments. Hope that helps! Vasileia
