Is Teeth-Shaving Safe?

Q.
My dentist has informed me that if I want to have Invisalign aligners, I will need to get some of my teeth shaved away. I am quite scared by the prospect as I have heard that it can cause sensitive teeth and damaged teeth. It it safe? Thanks.
A.
Thanks for your question. Tooth shaving is a safe procedure, as the amount of enamel removed is very small. It’s a very common procedure for Invisalign treatment as we do it to create space between the teeth so that they can move easily within the aligner. I’d suggest speaking to your dentist about your concerns, but as long as some enamel is left between the teeth, you won’t have any sensitivity.
