My Aligners Cause Me a Lot of Pain. What Can I Do?

Q.

Hi, I have been suffering with a lot of pain during my Invisalign treatment, and it gets worse with every new set of aligners. My gums are sore and swollen and I feel like I constantly have mouth ulcers. My dentist says this is bound to happen. I imagined it would be painful at first but it is really just constant all the time. Due to the amount of pain it causes I keep having to take them out so I’m worried that they’re not working as they should because I don’t have them in long enough. I haven’t told my orthodontist that I take them out because I don’t want him to be angry. What should I do?

Hello, thank you for your question. I’m sorry to hear that you are in such discomfort, and I must say I’m very surprised that you’re in this much pain. You really should mention it to your orthodontist, maybe the aligners are not fitting properly in which case you’re going to need a mid-course correction. Your orthodontist is there to help you, so I wouldn’t be afraid of telling him that you take the aligners out a lot. I hope you manage to get the problem sorted.
