My Teeth Look Bigger After Wearing Braces. Will They Ever Shrink Back?

Q.
Hi there, I have a question to ask. 8 months ago I had my metal braces removed, they’d been on for just over 18 months. Since they’ve been off I’ve noticed that my teeth are a lot bigger as a result, in particular the two teeth at the front. My dentist tells me that this is because of the bone reforming – I was actually worried that my teeth had been pulled away from the gums. Obviously I’m disappointed because I thought after having braces I’d finally be happy with my smile but this makes me feel even worse about my teeth. Will they ever shrink back?

Hi, thank you for your question. I’m sorry to hear that you’re unhappy with your treatment. Unfortunately, the teeth will not shorten on their own. It’s hard to discuss it really without seeing you, but think about the gum, does it look raised, and as a result you seem to be showing more tooth? Or is it more the case that now your teeth are aligned, the front teeth are more on display? Once you think you’ve got an idea about why they look bigger, I’d suggest you go and talk to your orthodontist about your concerns and I’m sure they will be able to rectify the problem. Good luck.
