I’ve Had Gum Disease in the Past. Will Invisalign Cause Future Problems?

August 19th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Akere. I had gum disease just over 2 years ago, but my mouth is more or less okay now. I do know that gum disease isn’t just a one-time thing and can come back. Because I had gum disease for quite a long time, my teeth have changed positions and my smile doesn’t look very nice now. I’m dying to have straight teeth and Invisalign sounds great but I’m worried that my gums and teeth are weaker because of the gum disease so will Invisalign cause problems for me?

Am I Suitable for Invisalign After Having Gum Disease?

August 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have suffered with gum disease for about a year now and have been visiting my dentist for periodontal treatment for a number of months to get it under control. I really want to use Invisalign to straighten my teeth, but am I suitable for it after having gum disease? Due to the gum disease there are gaps between my teeth that are quite noticeable. I plan to book a consultation as soon as I can, but I’d love to hear any advice you might have for me. Thanks in advance!

Can I Have Invisalign Treatment At The Same Time As Having Periodontal Treatment?

April 30th, 2014
Q.

Hi, what is your opinion on receiving aligners at the same time as having treatment for gum disease? I want to surprise my family when I visit them in Australia in 6 months time. I’ve always had a misaligned smile with large gaps and I think this is why my gums are in such poor health. I’m already being treated for my gums and looking for a dentist who would be willing to supply me with a brace system at the same time. Do you know of any? I live in Shrewsbury. Thanks for your time!

I Have Suffered From Gum Disease For Some Time. I Want To Know If I’ll Be A Suitable Candidate For Invisalign?

November 4th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Thorne. I’m a long term gum disease sufferer. I’ve managed to get it under control now with regular visits to my local dental hygienist. I am desperate for braces and was wondering if I am suitable candidate for Invisalign following gum disease? I feel it’s caused large gaps in my smile and I want to get my teeth re-aligned. I used to have such nice teeth! Any advice would really be great, I’m going to book a consultation as soon as I can get the time off from work. Thank you!

I Just Had My Aligners Removed, Along With 3 Teeth! What Happened?

July 29th, 2013
Q.

Hello there.I’m an adult and I’ve recently had Invaslign. When they were taken off, three of my teeth were broken. Is this common? I am currently 67 years old and none of my teeth have broken before. The treatment was going fine, all to plan with no worries at all. Then as soon as the aligners are removed by teeth come out with it! Do you think I had some underlying gum disease problem or something? Something that the orthodontist may have missed? I don’t know what else to do and don’t know where to turn from here. The orthodontist was just as shocked as I was and has referred me to a specialist dentist. I just feel as though I’ve wasted months on the treatment only for it to be completely unsuccessful. Thank you for your time.

Is it ok to have Invisalign after suffering with gum disease?

December 5th, 2011
Q.

Is it ok to have invisalign if you have had gum disease in the past? I had it about 5 years ago and my teeth haved moved because of it. I would like to have my smile straightened out with invisalign so no one will see it, but am worried that my gum disease will come back, because i have to have the brace in my mouth all the time. What do you think?

thank you

Will my past gum disease ruin my chances of treatment with Invisalign?

October 18th, 2011
Q.

i had gum disease about 4 years ago and although it all seems to have abated, i know that it can return. Because of this gum disease some of my teeth have moved into unflattering positions and I am really unhappy with my smile. I would love to have straight teeth and really like the sound of invisalign, but i am worried that the gum disease may have weakened my teeth, gums and bones and that putting any pressure on them may cause horrible problems in the future. What should I do doctor?

Thank you

I have recently overcome gum disease, would I be able to have Invisalign?

July 7th, 2011
Q.

Hello Doctor,

I wonder could you tell me, how long after gum disease are you allowed to have invisalign? I recently underwent some periodontal cleaning after my gums became swollen and sore. My dentist has xrayed my mouth and am I very lucky in that the disease hasn’t got to the roots. It has been 4 months since my cleaning and I have made sure to maintain a thorough cleaning routine brushing my teeth daily using mouthwash daily and flossing every few days.
I plan to go to my dentist in the next couple of weeks to confirm but just wanted to ask whether in your professional opinion, I would be viable for Invisalign? Thank you very much for your time doctor and any information you can give

Could bone loss have anything to do with previous Invisalign treatment?

March 1st, 2011
Q.
I finished my Invisalign course almost a year ago. Unfortunately during a follow up appointment my dentist noted bone loss and recommended bone augmentation. Could this be anything to do with the invisalign. And more importantly, how much is it going to hurt!!!!!,
