Study reveals invisalign use is on the Increase

March 13th, 2011

A recent study looking at invisalign treatments and their popularity published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dental Facial Orthopedics surveyed orthodontic dentists in the United States to investigate their future clinical practice plans regarding the use of different orthodontic appliances.

One of the study’s main findings was that over 80% of dentists that were surveyed plan to use Invisalign and the study concluded that Invisalign usage expected to grow in popularity in the United States because of projected future use by orthodontic residents. It is likely that the UK will follow the US trend as it has done previously with cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic treatment trends such as the recent growth of the Inman Aligner and also the new 6 month smiles braces system

Invisalign – the Clear Alternative now for Teens

March 13th, 2011

The revolutionary invisible option to metal brackets and braces became a huge success with around one million adult patients worldwide.

Up until recently, Invisalign was more frequent in adults. But now the new FDA approved Invisalign Teen has been purposely designed to give teenagers confidence and comfort.

The barely visible Invisalign can be taken out for eating, special occasions or most activities teenagers enjoy as Invisalign Teen only needs to be worn for the prescribed number of hours each day.

The easy to use and remove aligners give teenagers a straight set of teeth within 9 – 15 months with less hassle and a subtle, almost unnoticeable treatment.

Invisalign Teen comes in a set of aligners that gently push the teeth into place. Patients’ aligners are replaced with a new every two – three weeks, avoiding painful adjustment procedures for metal or wire braces.

With six replacements offered for lost or damaged aligners, Invisalign Teen is designed to handle teeth that haven’t erupted entirely and are equipped with a specially adapted monitoring system. It’s easy to see why Invisalign Teen quickly became the Number One brace alternative in the US, a trend that’s already spreading fast to the UK.

Ceramic or Metal?

March 13th, 2011

Highly aesthetic, highly resistance and minimal breakage. The Opal Bracket (Ultradent Products) has recently been introduced for those who don’t prefer Invisalign to metal braces.

Made of polycrystalline and translucent glass, the new Opal Bracket is a step forward in ceramic brace technology. The brackets were introduced just recently at an Orthodontics Convention in Germany and include a built-in hinged door to fit over wires and are self-ligating, seeing an end to stained ligature elastics.

The Brackets can be used to correct all irregularities such as crossbites, overbites and underbites. The material of the brackets provide a stronger and much more ‘natural’ look than normal metal braces, less prone to staining and less irritating to the gums.

Most people find that other ceramic brackets look natural only for white teeth but Opal Brackets can look particularly natural with slightly discoloured teeth and are barely visible in photographs or from a distance.

Compared to another leading self-ligating bracket, Oyster (Gestenco Int.), the Opal Bracket has shown to have the lowest amount of friction and still lower friction from aging Opal Brackets.

Contrary to popular belief, ceramic brackets are just as strong as normal metal brackets as they are bound with plasma light. Opal Brackets are no exception, providing a strong, successful treatment for all patients who would prefer braces to Invisalign but still want the most natural smile through their treatment.

Free Dentistry For Children

March 13th, 2011

The University of Detroit Mercy Dental School have announced free dental screenings for children whose procedures could have cost more than $5, 000 and may not have been covered by insurance.

Families woke up early in the morning to have their children screened for free. Around 1, 000 parents lined up at the doors of the dental school on Friday, hoping for free braces and dental treatment. The University of Detroit Mercy Dental School has offered 60 free pairs to children.

In the early hours, staff at the dental school handed out 500 tickets to those waiting in line but declined the rest of the parents and youngsters, who were told to come back early next week.

Families in high numbers even camped around the building in desperation to get their children fitted. As it seems, sixty pairs of braces barely scratches the surface for dental needs today.

Children are more likely to need braces than adults. Part of the problem, said Dr. Daniel Briskie (a Rochester Dentist), is the amount of carbohydrates in children’s food and that a lot of parents thinking baby teeth don’t need to be taken care of as they grow out.
