Will Tooth-Grinding Wear Away at Invisalign Aligners?

Q.
Hello Drs Cannell & Stafford. I suffer with Bruxism and have to wear a mouth guard at night to stop me from grinding my teeth. My teeth are very crooked though so I would like to have braces. My dentist says I should have traditional fixed braces but I would much prefer to have Invisalign. I can see why my dentist doesn’t think I should have Invisalign as I wouldn’t be able to wear the guard at night but I would like a second opinion anyway. Would my tooth grinding wear away at the aligners? I really don’t want big metal braces so are there other options for me if I can’t have Invisalign? Thank you.
A.
Hello, thank you for your question. Potentially, you could have Invisalign treatment. Instead of wearing each aligner for 14 days, you could instead wear them for 10 days. If you grind your teeth at night, there is a possibility that over time you will wear the aligners down but this is dependent on how severe your case of Bruxism is. The likelihood is also reduced if you have aligners on both your top and bottom teeth because then it would be plastic against plastic.

If you were looking for alternatives, lingual braces might be an idea because although they’re fixed, they are placed on the back of the teeth so nobody can see them.
Good luck! – Dr Andy Stafford.
