Am I Allergic to Invisalign?

Q.
Hi there, I’m hoping you can help to answer my question. I started Invisalign treatment a month ago, and I anticipated some mild discomfort at first but my gums are actually severely swollen. This started roughly around the time I got my first aligner, but it hasn’t gotten any better. Is it possible that I’m allergic to the aligner? If so, what can be done about it? Thank you.
A.
Hello, thank you for your question and I’m sorry to hear about the discomfort you have been experiencing. The material used to manufacture Invisalign aligners is a low-allergy plastic so it is very unlikely that you are allergic. It’s difficult to come to a conclusion without seeing you but I would suggest visiting a dental hygienist to make sure you don’t have any underlying problems with your gums, and going back to your Invisalign dentist to check that the aligners are fitted correctly. Good luck.
