Can gum disease lead to more harmful conditions?

Q. Hello. I am a 40 year old man and have recently been diagnosed with gum disease. I’ll admit, I have never been one to take care of my teeth all that well but it still came as a shock. I am worried whether it is contagious? I have also heard it can lead to other more harmful conditions?

A. You need to get your teeth and gums professionally cleaned. There are links with gum disease to other health issues so it needs to be taken seriously.
