Should I wear aligners during the night?

Q.
Hello,
I really would like to have aligners if i could choose any of the braces treatment available but I have done some research on the net and found a few worrying stories about wearing the aligners during the night.
Some sites say that they should not be worn during the night as they are bad for oral health and can aid bacteria. Whilst I generally don’t believe this to be true and as long as the teeth and aligners are clean then I don’t see a problem. I would just like to clarify before I have a consultation whether this is true or not?
Also what is the longest time a person had had to wear the aligners generally? More than two years?
A.
Hi
If your teeth, gums and aligners are clean prior to going to bed then wearing at night shouldn’t be a problem. I’d recommend more frequent hygienist visits for any patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and fluoride mouth rinses. You should also reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates (sugars) – this is good for your dental health anyway.
Although some people have worn aligners for 2 years, it depends on the complexity and most people wear aligners for 12-18 months
Good luck
