Can Invisalign braces cause root resorption?

Q.
I am thinking about getting an invisalign brace but am worried about some things I have heard about it, including something called root absorption, who are the people who are most at risk of this, how can you protect yourself from it and how can you tell if you have it?
Many thanks
A.
Hi
Whenever you move teeth with any type of brace there is a risk the body will start to ‘attack’ the roots of the teeth and they will start to resorb (shorten), this is known as root resorbtion. It is uncommon but a risk everyone should be aware of. The forces generated with Invisalign treatment are low so again a low risk. People at risk are this who have had a trauma to the tooth / teeth, previous orthodontic treatment or this with a history of this. A ’round the head’ x-ray (known as an OPG) will confirm that no resorbtion has occurred.
Good luck
