Without seeing your appliance, buttons or brackets, it is difficult to tell. I doubt you were asked to change the ligatures around each of your single brackets.
First, ask your dentist to demonstrate what he meant. Practice it in the surgery with him, but usually you can learn these movements very easily and quickly.
