I have just moved on to wearing Essix retainers but I think they might be pushing against my filling as it is really painful.

Q.
I finished Invisalign treatment in March 2011 and was fitted with an Essix retainer which was a well fitted. I had a filling replaced on the top teeth and it felt slightly thicker than the mold. Since then I have been in constant pain and the teeth appear to have moved. I now have numbness and swelling to my upper jaw and it looks as if the incisor has pulled down. I have been advised by NHS Direct Dental Nurse to remove retainer as I have an appointment with my orthodontist in 4 days. Will another course of invisalign correct this? Could you please advise?
A.
Dear Sir/Madam,
it is very difficult to advise on this. Numbness and swelling could be associated with many things, such as a deep fillling which may have involved the nerve?
Leaving out the retainer is advised until your orthodontist can have a look but I think that if your tooth has pulled down then you may have an infection above the tooth due to the filling instead.
The dentist/orthodontist needs to know if your tooth is still alive.
