Q. My dentist said I would need some of my teeth shaving away to make room but i am unsure about this part of invisalign. I have never heard about this before. Can you offer any advice?
A. This is fairly common practice with Invisalign and in fact with many other orthodontic systems available. This is done to create space betweent the teeth which allows them to move past each other easily.
It is true that some health tooth would usually need to be “sacrificed” to allow this is happen, but it creates in total a few millimeters of space to allow your teeth to become well aligned.
It is not the nicest thing in the world to have done, if done well, it needn’t be too uncomfortable or painful.
The term is Interproximal Reduction. Research as been done on it and long term you shouldn’t have sensitivity if the dentist has left some enamel in between the teeth.
