Is it a risk not to wear aligners according to recommended time?

Q. I know you are supposed to wear the aligners for abut 22 hours a day but I have not been doing so. I only wear them when I go to bed which means that I wear them for about 8 hours. I am about halfway through treatment and they still fit fine but I can see that there is a bit of space between my aligner and teeth and that the teeth are not exactly where they should be according to the aligner. What can I do about this? I have been unable to see my dentist for quite some time because I am away but I fear I have messed the treatment up? My teeth have improved somewhat but are not as good as they should be I think.
A. You certainly are taking a big risk. I had a patient who did the same thing and with each aligner she became more out of alignment. You need to start asap to wear them 24/7. The teeth will not be as accurate as your aligner plans, and you may need more impressions.
