What are attachments in relation to invisalign?

Q. I have been reading up on invisalign and have come across what is called ‘attachments’. Does every patient get these or is it just for certain cases?
A. An attachment is like an anchor point on a tooth. It is made of tooth coloured filling material which is bonded on to the tooth surface with adhesive. Placing and removing the attachments should not damage the tooth. These are normally placed on the teeth near the start of the treatment and removed at the end of the treatment. Attachments can be found in a square or rectangular shape.

Not all patients need to have attachments as it depends on the type of tooth movements you are trying to achieve.

The Invisalign braces have raised sections for where they sit over the attachments. For side teeth they tend to give stability of the brace overall which confirms that the braces are properly sitting on the teeth. For front teeth they help in the movement, such as movements when the upper teeth need to move downwards towards the lower teeth or where teeth are trying to rotate. The Invisalign dentist should go through this with you.
